Venessa Kimball Talks About the Genre of Her
Piercing the Fold Series: Why mature YA/
New Adult Paranormal and What is
“Fringe” Sci-Fi?
GENRE-
1
: a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition
characterized by a particular style, form, or content
Young Adult Fiction, New Adult Fiction, Adult Fiction,
Science Fiction, Contemporary Romance Fiction, Historical Fiction…and the list
goes on. Every single book has its
place in a genre niche. After writing
Piercing the Fold: Book 1, Venessa Kimball had to find a place for it in the
sea of genres. Venessa sat down with us
here at Paranormal Reads to give us some insight as to why she chose the genre
she did for her epic series, Piercing the Fold.
When I finished writing Piercing the Fold: Book 1 and the
time came to publish through Createspace,
the section that had me sitting in front of my computer screen with
frozen fingers was the “Category/Genre” section. Having been an avid reader most of my life,
selecting books because of their genre has always been on my radar. While writing PtF: Book 1, I knew the time
would come when I would have to categorize it among other books with similar
content. After a few hours, two loads
of laundry, and surfing Amazon.com by genre,
I had my niche for PtF.
The Piercing the Fold series is a bit of a hybrid. The core
of PtF is driven by scientific, metaphysic, and spiritual theories and
concepts. This series definitely works
to blend both science and theology. Some
of the theories lie on the edge or “fringe” of what could be plausible in our
world scientifically. Astrophysic terms
like wormholes, black holes, white holes, and galactic intersection are not
possible, but with time and knowledge could very well be the next frontier for
scientific discoveries. Theological
theories lie on the edge or “fringe” of the orthodox spiritual teachings. I worked hard not to be blasphemous toward
any religion, but I did want to put it out there that none of us can be certain
that any of these theories could be plausible. Hence, the Paranormal “Fringe” Sci-Fi
category.
The next component
that I needed to decide on was the audience of readership. Would this be for an adult audience or a young
adult, teen audience? The main
character, Jesca, herself is nineteen in PtF: Book 1. She is in college and discovering herself,
much like the eighteen and nineteen year olds in the real world. Much of what Jesca goes through is
transitioning her from a young adult into a “new” adult. Not quite fully an adult yet, she is posed
with some heavy responsibilities that she must embrace or run away from. This is where the label “Mature YA, New
Adult” surfaced.
“New Adult” has
recently emerged as a genre attracting readers ages 18 well into the 35+
range. Many readers are just discovering
this genre. And, many have already been reading it without the label. Examples
could easily be Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series And Suzanne Collin’s Hunger
Games series.
I have to add that the Piercing the Fold series is not a
simple, neat package of blended Sci-Fi and the Paranormal. It has much more to offer the reader. Suspense, Romance, Horror, and Espionage are
just a few that stand out from what fans have been saying in their
reviews.
It has been eight months since the publication of Book 1 in
the Piercing the Fold series and it has quite a following now! Fans ranging from seventeen years to fifty
plus years in age. Mostly women, but some men,
have found this series intriguing and addictive.
