Song and Signal Blog Tour

Today on my blog I have the Song and Signal blog tour. On my stop there is a spotlight, review, and giveaway.

From the award-winning, bestselling author of Devil's Hand and Burning Cards comes a universe-spanning science fiction adventure. *

Seventeen year-old genius Zakari Sharp has never stood on the surface of a planet, never seen a sun-streaked sky. He lives on a corporate-owned mining facility at the edge of the solar system, with a mute alien for a guardian and brainwashed, muscle-bound ex-convicts for company. The day his father vanished was so long ago that Zak thought he would never hear from him again.

Zak was wrong.

Now, chased off-station by a cabal of mythical assassins, Zak and his best friend Liz embark on a harrowing journey across the galaxy, to find his father's hiding place and learn the universe-shaking discovery that hides with him. But their enemies will stop at nothing to steal the secret themselves.

Can a teenage boy change the fate of the universe? Or will a nanotech-wielding killer reach him first?

PRAISE FOR SONG AND SIGNAL:
“The kind of storytelling that makes a statement: M. E. Patterson is here to stay.” — Austin Post
“[Song and Signal is] WELL worth the read. Enjoyable and immersive.” — Michal

“Patterson’s work will blow you away… a page turning, roller coaster ride.” — ReviewsByMolly

Review:
I’ve never been a big fan of Sci-Fi books but Song and Signal has changed that for me and I can’t wait to dive into more books of this genre.

Zak has not had it easy with his mom dying at an early age and his dad took off with a stolen ship. So now he is being raised by an alien and doing crazy dangerous things, but thankfully he has his best friend Liz to help get him out of trouble and scold him at the same time. But his latest mission doesn’t go as planned and now he is on the biggest adventure of his life trying to find his father along with the truth.

I loved the characters but what really made this book stand out for me is the world. From the different aliens, space stations, asteroids, and ship everything has such great detail. That you feel as if your there right along with Zak exploring all these aspects of the world that M.E. Patterson has created. He kept my attention and had me going WOW quite a few times while reading. As the story unfolds though it had me wondering if Zak would get the girl, save the day, and get the greatest adventure he’s been wanting. But if you want to know you need to read Song and Signal for yourself.

If you want to have an adventure exploring the universe filled with a story line that will blow you away and having a great time than pick up Song and Signal. 4/5 Bloody Fangs

Excerpt:

“So, what’s it like to be married to a rock star?”
Kansas heard this question so many times during her ten year marriage to Quinn that it now caused her head to ache. She didn’t want to talk about her ex-husband with Barret. Still, she knew a lot of people were _______ about marriage to a celebrity.
“Ex, Barret, ex. Quinn isn’t my husband any longer. But to answer your question, Barret, I’ve known Quinn since I was ten years old. When he was Sean Marshall, an ________ person, long before he ever became Quinn Michaels.”
The resentment was evident in her voice. She didn’t want him to think she lived some fairy tale existence with Quinn. In the end, Quinn was just a man with many foibles who was admired by millions _______ of a pretty face and a beautiful voice. Attributes that Quinn took full _________ of.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry. It’s just…I’ve wondered why…” he hesitated.
She knew what he was getting at. “______ not prying, Barret. If you want to know why Quinn and I are no longer married, just ask.”
Kansas,” he touched her cheek, “you are the sweetest, most beautiful woman I’ve ever known, and after his ________ visit here, I can tell Quinn still loves you.”
There was such a soft look in his blue eyes, and once again, Kansas couldn’t __________ why Barret thought nothing more of her than just a surrogate little sister. Didn’t he realize how good they could be together?
“Be that as it may, Barret, Quinn and I will never again be a couple,” she said firmly. “Once a cheater, always a cheater. I __________ the articles in the weekly rags, and the chatter on the internet for a very long time. But when Lynsey Reznor came into his life, I knew I had to get out with what little dignity I still had.”
He cocked his head. “Lynsey Reznor? That name is so familiar.”
“She’s a very __________ true-crime writer from Miami. You can’t walk past a bookstore or watch the Crime Central channel without seeing her.”
Barret averted his eyes. “Oh, that Lynsey Reznor.”
“I can’t hate her too much, though. Apparently she was as ________ to my existence, as I was to hers. She dumped Quinn when she _____ out he was married.”
He shook his head. “Men like your ex-husband give all men a bad name. If we were married, you never would have to worry that I would give a woman a ______ look. I’m loyal to a fault.”
If only, she thought.
“Well, if anything came out of it, you must be pretty well financially set after your divorce.”
For a ______, she considered lying to him, pretend to be a broken little divorcee. But in an instant, she knew she wanted to keep her relationship with Barret honest.
“My financial settlement with Quinn is public knowledge. For ten years, I receive a certain percentage of his previous year’s earnings. If I remarry, all financial support ends.”
Barret let out a low whistle _____ his breath. “I guess you won’t be getting remarried anytime soon—not for the next years, at least.”
Anger sparked inside her. “Do you really think I’m that shallow? That all I’m _________ with is a never ending tap of cash?” she snapped. “Contrary to your belief, I look _______ to marrying a man who doesn’t need mass love to feed his enormous ego. I want a home in the suburbs and a garden full of children.
_______, even if I was all about the money, one of these days Quinn will fall out of favor with his fans, and the money will dry up.”
She felt the need to not mention that even if she never saw another penny from Quinn, she would never be poor.
Kansas didn’t want to talk any more about money. To her, it didn’t matter what either of them had, if they were only ________. Even though his kisses were frequent, and his touches lingered longer on her skin, it was becoming clearer to Kansas with each passing day that she was deluding herself with the belief that she and Barret would have a _______ ever after together. Still, she would stubbornly cling to the small ____ until Barret once and for all, told her to her face that there would never be anything more between them than good friends.

Ivory Blog Tour

Today on my blog I have the Ivory Blog Tour. On my stop there is a spotlight, excerpt, review, and giveaway.

As a child in the desert kingdom of Gryth, Ivory witnessed the brutal murder of her parents at the hands of a sinister race known as the Lecs.
Now Queen of her people, a vengeance-fueled Ivory launches a final battle to annihilate the enemy once and for all. But on the eve of war, betrayed by her own kind and left in the hands of the Lecs, she's forced to learn the shocking truth about their two peoples, and the diabolical curse that's plagued them for centuries.
Armed with newfound knowledge and unexpected allies, Ivory must face the real enemy that's haunted her all her life, and make a choice that will mean the difference between a new beginning and the end of the world.
Ivory is an exercise in duality made reality; an exploration of darkness and light, male and female, sun and moon… seen through the eyes of two cultures ripped apart by an ancient evil whose pain resonates through the ages like the beating of a drum.

Excerpt:

“And the lives you’ve taken Ivory, your calloused hands dipped in their blood? After all that you’ve done, you feel nothing?” It jerks its loathsome face toward the solitary candle. Eyes leer at her from the darkness. Bright, quick eyes. They’re not red or soulless. They’re blue like a clear lake that you can see to the bottom of. Blue with flecks of brown like islands in that lake.
She blinks in confusion. His face is beautiful. His skin is pale, his hair long and white like the petals of the Caldra. Her jaw drops. “Am I... have I reached the gods?”
He laughs. The movement makes the flame dance. She looks down, spiteful. He’s toying with her. Why wouldn’t Taheel be beautiful? "

Review:

Two races in a revenge fueled war. Ivory the Queen of the Gryth people saw her parents brutally murdered by the Lecs. Nothing but wiping out their whole race will help calm her vengeance and maybe give her piece of heart. But everything changes for Ivory when she is betrayed by some one she trusts. She is handed over to her enemy, Silver the King of the Lecs. But what happens next will tear apart everything Ivory thought about herself, her people, the hatred she holds her heart against the Lecs, and her very existence.

So this is one of those books where I feel like I started reading it in the middle of the book. I was confused for awhile trying to figure out what was going on but after sticking with it I started to understand the story line and even connect with Ivory and Silver.

Ivory is one of the heroines that you feel everything she is feeling. You can feel her rage, vengeance, pain, betrayal, confusion, love, but most of all her devotion to her people. She is a Queen who will do anything for her people even if it goes against everything she believes as long as it’s what is good for them.

Silver is my new book crush. I just fell in love with him immediately. His devotion to Ivory is breath taking and heart breaking at the same time. Even with all his power never once does he hurt Ivory or her people which to me is the true definition of a King.

What truly makes this book good though is FM’s way with words. She paints both kingdoms so vividly that I felt like I could feel the orbs that heat the Kingdom of the Gryths and see the shadows of the Lecs. I can’t wait to read more of this story. 4/5 Bloody Fangs

Aren't author's bios boring? I always wanted to read one that went something like this:
F.M. Sherrill: recent citizen of earth. Plans on ruling the planet once she gets over the common cold. Or, F.M. Sherrill: time traveler. Decided to alter the space-time continuum by writing a novel, thus changing history slightly, which will eventually lead to the rise of a new human species.
But here it is. F.M. Sherrill is a novelist, A.K.A. an avid bullshitter; that's why she lives in L.A.. She's been writing for as long as her ancient mind can remember, devouring tales like an anemic vampire roaming the streets in hot pink heels, always thirsty for more. When she's not writing, she's making steampunk weapons, sewing giant plant-eater Mario plushes, making costumes for some film bloke or cosplayer, and sculpting/casting movie prop replicas while gardening in her urban apartment. Her favorite tools? A soldering iron, a blowtorch, a band saw, a sonic screwdriver, a replicator and an active imagination.

Kaboom Blog Tour

Today on my blog I have the Kaboom blog tour. On my stop there is a spotlight, review, and giveaway.

The interlocking stories of a typical community and the lives and drams of the untypical people who live there. Lawnville, where murders have broken hearts, mailmen and bus drivers are locked in a secret feud, loving husbands betray their wives, bullies rule the local school, dogs yearn to be free, justice happens despite the police, and a beautiful but ruthless nymphomaniac destroys the lives of the men who love her.

Review:
This book follows the lives of a small town called Lawnville. Each chapter is from a different person’s perspective in the town. But all are intertwined in one way or the other. From the feud with the mailmen and bus drivers, a school bully, murders, a dog who longs to be free, and one woman whose appetite for sex ruins so many lives.

I enjoyed this book it was a fast easy read. It’s not my usual type of book but I really liked the way the author makes all the characters seem real. They could be our neighbors, friends, or even our own family. But there was one aspect of this story I had a hard time with the most and that was Ernest the dog. He longed to be free from his chained up back yard where his family pays no attention to him. I being the animal lover I am it was hard to read. I just wanted to smack the family and bring home Ernest to live with me. But other than that the story flowed effortlessly from one character’s point of view to the next. Not once was I lost while reading Kaboom. I look forward to reading more from this author. 3/5 Bloody Fangs

George Cunningham comes from a long line of story tellers and prevaricators.  Sitting around the living room on Sunday nights, drinking Coca Cola out of the bottle, listening to his grandfather pass down stories to his sons and their families, hearing his father and uncles tell their own stories, each one trying to top the other, and learning as a kid how to take the humor and bitter-sweet tragedy of life and weave it into a good tale.

George grew up on the West Coast of Florida, where he spent many happy hours dipping his toes into the warm waters of Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.  He was a late bloomer who didn’t graduate from University of Florida until he was 29.  As a young man, he worked as a survey crew chief, a civil engineering aide, a short-order cook, a painter, a laborer, a construction inspector, a gardener and a seltzer bottle washer. After graduation he worked as an editor, a copy editor, a layout man, a columnist, a police reporter, a business reporter, and a feature writer. He served three years in the U.S. Army, including a year in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

George came to California in 1969 and immediately fell in love with the state.  He worked at the South Bay Daily Breeze, City News Service, the Orange County Register, and the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

He is the former editor and publisher of The Cunningham Report, an electronic newsletter on West Coast ports that he and his wife Carmela founded in 1995 and ran for 15 years before closing operations in December 2010. They have now founded a new venture, Reader Publishing Group, which will represent and publish books by a select group of authors, including themselves.

George is a writer because he has to be.  There are new stories to tell, new ways to tell them and new people to tell them too.  He plans to write until he dies.

He has published two novels – The Big Story and Kaboom.

The Big Story, set in the early 1970s, is about a reporter who is chasing a story that the police, the mob, and his own editors want to kill. Kaboom is a darkly humorous look at the quirky community of Lawnville and the ripples that extend throughout that community following a brutal murder. Both The Big Story (link to Big Story page) and Kaboom (link to Kaboom page) are available in printed and digital form.

George and his wife Carmela are currently writing a book on the history of the Port of Long Beach. Look for it in 2015.
