I earned a degree in Comparative Religion, so themes-wise
that certainly pops up here and there in my writing (okay, more than a little
here and there in some books).
I write what I enjoy reading/watching - which is fantasy/sci-fi with dark humor
and a bit of romance. What I consider romance however is to some...a bit off
(and kinked out). And when I say dark humor I mean black. But I always have
lighthearted moments (I do not believe a story should be all one way or
another). Gotta spice things up!
Speaking of...I like to write stories that cater to all sexual preferences in
one story (as opposed to just writing gay/lesbian lit, etc). I have your
typical male-female romances. I have male-male, female-female, transgender,
bi-sexual, sub-dom, etc. This is mostly due to the fact that well...1. I like
writing about it. 2. I see it in my everyday life. 3. I like having a
well-rounded cast of characters from all walks of life.
I am the author of the Morningstar Trilogy and the Wastes Series.
In the early 21st century, the Cold War between the American
and Chinese Empires slogs on in a stalemate. There's a ceasefire in effect, but
the peace is artificial—secretly enforced by an alien blockade that surrounds
the planet. Earth is caught in a territory struggle between two warring
factions: the Empire and the Resistance. Lacking harvestable talents, both
groups classify Earthlings as Wasters.
Hidden among the Wasters is an alien girl with the power of moving spaceships.
She teams up with Rake, a drug-addicted ex-Astronaut, to join an intergalactic
war that Earth did not know existed…but first Rake has to realize he's
travelling with an alien to begin with.
My Review:
This is not like any other book I have read. But I enjoyed
it and I am buying book two immediately to start it.
I was drawn into this world that Darcy has created from the
start. Aliens, war, adventure, romance and humor what is not to love. I loved
all the characters even when they annoyed me. The storyline flows really well
and we get just enough information to leave us begging for more. The ending was
great they all end up in space which had me going and buying book two just so I
could read more. But I will warn you don’t stay up late to read this unless you
live alone cause this book will have you laughing out loud and waking up
everyone in your house just like it did to me. 4/5 Bloody Fangs

A
howl from outside the building woke Ravil up.
Her
eyes shot open as goose bumps raced across her skin. She reached for Rake, but
her hands slipped through air. Another
howl came louder than the last, followed by a faint scream. She stared at her empty outstretched hand as the
realization set in—he’d abandoned her.
Ravil
slipped out of the tub, kept low to the floor, and held her knife out in front
of her. She reached the hall and crawled
towards the windows. Weak sunlight
filtered into the apartment through the grimy glass. Every fiber of her being told her to go back
and hide in the darkness of the bathroom, but she would not wait for death to
come to her. Rake had left her; he’d
lied last night. She held back tears and
moved another few inches. She was on her
own now and she would handle it.
The
hall creaked. Ravil froze.
Rake
kneeled by her side and whispered into her ear, “Not a sound now,
Bebette.” He held one of her Bowie
knives and crawled past her, keeping his head below the level of the
windows. He crept towards the closest
and used a piece of mirror to look outside.
His shift in expression made Ravil scoot back into the bathroom. She climbed into the tub and covered her
ears.
The
howls and screams continued until they cut off in a definitive silence. Rake came in some minutes later, his face
ashen. He sat down and looked over at
her. “We cannot walk out on the
streets.”
“Wh…why?”
“We
just can’t.” Rake’s hands shook. He grabbed his left hand with his right and
pressed it into the floor; he broke into a sweat. He took a deep breath. “It’s not safe.”
“Can’t
we run?”
He
shook his head. “Do you want to end up a
screamer?”
Ravil
sank down below the level of the porcelain.
“What is out there?”
“The
low, the hungry, and the desperate.”
Rake looked nauseous. “You don’t
go to the Dead, never, even if you will get killed otherwise. Everyone
knows that.”
She
looked towards the doorway. “How did
those others get out there then, the ones screaming?”
Interview:
When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
Sometime during high school, but it
was still behind my desire to be a fine artist.
That first and second designation flip-flopped in college, putting
writing at the top of my dream jobs.
How did the idea of Wastes series come to you?
Looking through Sci-Fi artwork on
DeviantArt. The pictures gave me a
nebulous blob for an idea that sounded interesting. Sitting down with some music and a notepad
developed it into the story that’s published now. The idea certainly did not come to me fully
formed. Rake and Ravil was all I had in
the beginning, but they were enough to get me motivated.
Are any of your characters based off people you know?
Absolutely, but those characters do
not show up until books 2 and on. They
tend to be very weird.
How many books will be in the series?
Seven…but book seven is so large I
might have to release two paperbacks for it.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
I switch from writing new material
to proofing and editing old material. If
that doesn’t work, I set aside writing entirely and I switch over to
illustration for a while.
What is your writing process?
I sit at the computer re-reading
text until I get to where I left off and then I start. Not very formal, I know.
What is your favorite paranormal being?
Fallen angels or demons, depending
on how their mythos is played out in the story.
What was the first paranormal book you read?
Hmm…I don’t know if I remember
that. I’ve been reading fantasy, sci-fi
and paranormal stuff since I was in grade school.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Terry Pratchett, Dan Simmons, Storm
Constantine, Tad Williams.
Can you give us any hints about future books?
Well, there are seven total books in
the Wastes series. The crew goes from
having carefree hijinks in space to black hole spelunking, exploring subterranean
palaces, engaging in Hunter cage fights, fighting pirates, flying to the end of
the universe and back, and waging war on a galaxy-spanning scale. The story gets a bit ambitious by the end.
Is there a writer or writers that inspire you?
All of the favorite authors I listed
are my writer inspirations.
What paranormal being would you like to be?
Something elemental, I think that’d
be neat.
If you were stranded on a deserted island what
character would you want with you and why?
If we’re talking about my characters, I’d want
Marx. The Hunter is brutally smart, can
hunt things down for dinner, and he’s always scheming. If anyone would get me off the desert island,
or at least be entertaining for the duration, it’d be that Hunter.
For other characters, I’d probably
pick Hermione. I’d want someone smart,
and frankly, she could probably just zip us out of there with a spell.
What would you do in a zombie apocalypse?
I’d group up with my boyfriend and family,
get supplies, and then get the heck out of town.
What 3 people would you like to have dinner with and
why?
There’s no one I’d really like to
get dinner with. I’m horribly shy and
meeting someone for the first time at dinner to talk would be brutal. It’d be worse if they were some actor or
writer that I admired. I’d probably get
three glasses of wine in before the appetizers even arrived. It would be a disaster. J

Pratchett, and Stephen Fry. I wouldn’t
have to talk at all, it’d be excellent.
