Ashes & Ice Blog Tour

I am so excited to be participating in the Ashes & Ice tour. I have wanted to read this book for awhile and I am glad I got to. Before I show you my review lets get to know the author Rochelle first and learn about her book.

Rochelle grew up dreaming up stories. When she entered high school, she tucked away her creative side and jumped head-first into academics, work, and service projects. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Political Science and Communication when she was twenty years old. After years away from her writing, Rochelle picked up a pen and started fleshing out a character sketch that she outlined when she was twelve. That sketch was the start of the Ashes and Ice story. Rochelle lives in the DC metro area with her husband and daughter. By day she works as a behavioral therapist. By night, she is a dreamer and is busy tapping out new stories on her keyboard.

She is desperate to remember.
He is aching to forget.
Together, they are not broken.
But together, one may not survive.

Jade wakes up with no memory of her past and blood on her hands.

Plagued by wicked thoughts, she searches for answers. Instead, she finds a boy who doesn't offer her answers, but hope. But sometimes, when nightmares turn into reality and death follows you everywhere, hope is not enough.

LUST. LOVE. LOSS. Sometimes, all that is left are Ashes and Ice

My Review:
WOW!! This book blew me away. I was hooked from page one and what an EPIC ride until the very last page.

Jade has no memory of who she is. But she is having flash backs of dead girls and fears a darkness taking her over. She is trying to find out who she is and who keeps calling to her while battling the darkness that is trying to consume her. Along the way she meets a woman named Nana who takes her in and tries to take care of her while Jade tries to search for answers. Jade enrolls in school and meets Connor a boy who is trying to get over the death of his father and just wants to be invisible that is until Jade enters his world. Both Jade and Connor are broken but together they start to heal one another. But with the dead girls pilling up and a murderer who wants Jade she has to get back her memories if she has any chance of defeating the killer.

I instantly loved Jade and Connor. She is so strong and will defend Connor when ever she feels anybody picking on him. Connor really comes out of his shell and starts to live again after the death of his father thanks to Jade.  They have such a strong bond to one another. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time reading this book. Rochelle has such a magical way with words that you feel every emotion from the characters.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away which are so hard because I want to keep talking about how amazing this book is. It has stayed with me days after I am done and all I want is more Jade and Connor. I need book two ASAP! Buy this book I promise you will enjoy the ride Rochelle takes you on. 5/5 Bloody Fangs

Excerpt 1:

Jade

The girl’s glassy, dead eyes stare into me, through me, pierce me with a fierce urgency, with a wicked accusation. The blood is still on my hands.
Red hair, blue eyes, a constellation of freckles on pale skin. She was fragile and innocent, a lovely thing. That is what I think until I see the gashes on her wrists and throat. With her blood spilling out, she looks delicious. She’s mine. Possessiveness shocks me, stabs into me. I run, tearing away from a craving I don't understand.
Breathless, I grit my teeth and run harder, faster.

My feet pound against the earth, away from the lifeless body and toward the lights of the city lingering on the horizon. Rot and death linger in my nostrils. Unscarred skin stretches taut over my freezing bones. Echoes of an empty memory reverberate in my mind, taunting me. The ice chases me, clutches me, and bites at my heels, sending shivers up my spine. The ice wants me back, but I run forward, toward the lights, toward the heat, toward a world that burns me, because I have no other choice.
The lights are so close. Heat scalds my skin.
Images race through my mind, paralyzing me. I skid to a stop, my boots digging into the mud. The vision’s blurred edges materialize into solid shapes.
             I gasp.
A new horror rakes my insides. Desperation propels me forward; the pictures nagging at my seams threaten to tear me apart.
Scorching fire licks over my skin. In my vision, I contort like a vile, ugly creature, eyes as black as decay. My frame hunches over the small, dead girl, like a demon looming over a defenseless child. Her blood drips from my mouth.
I lick my lips and taste only salty sweat.
I run, desperate to trample the vision under my feet, to crush it deep into the ground.
I refuse to believe the image, refuse to acknowledge the monster within me demanding to be unleashed—and the possibility it has already been unbound. An unrelenting tide of fear washes over me. Past the denial, the fear, and the hope, I think I can still taste her.
The cold stillness inside me cracks open just as the lights of the city slam into me.

Excerpt 2:

Connor

Tears burn. I never realized it before, but they do. Tears reach down my throat and settle in my gut until the pain cripples me. I clutch my stomach as I look into the casket. His face doesn’t even look the same. Bloated like a Mardi Gras float, discolored like a mannequin. This isn’t my father.
            But it is.
If I have learned anything in my short life, it is this: funerals are bullshit. People dress in carefully pressed black suits. Parents give me “meaningful” nods as if that could ease the grief. It doesn’t.
Then there are the kids from school, the ones dragged along by their parents. People drag their kids along as if filling the church was a necessary thing. As if the more pews filled somehow expedite the dead’s trip to heaven. I doubt it does. Maybe some of the girls went shopping to buy just the right outfit so their cleavage to respectability ratio was just right, or  their ass to waist ratio was cinched properly.
People sit in the pews dressed in their finest let’s-go-pay-our-respects-to-the-dead-guy-we-never-knew wear, smacking the gum in their mouths, cupping cellphones so they can LOL any comment  buzzing in, and drumming their fingers because the pastor is going on too long.  All they want to do is go home, sneak in a make-out session with their girlfriends, eat their dinners, and maybe catch a 7 o’clock movie.
I hate these kids. The ones who stare at me, roll their eyes, and yawn. The ones who trip me at school and slam me into lockers. The ones who sit in a pew, contributing to the headcount, while I sit up here in front, holding back the tears fighting to make their appearance. I swallow them down. I won’t cry. Not here. Not with these people.
Dad’s funeral should be an empty church with mom, his three brothers, and me. It should be the five of us having a messy, sloppy, sobbing affair where we cling to each other because we are all we have left. The marble floors should be slick with our tears. It isn’t. We sit here, straight backed, completely composed as if death is just a passing expiration date and our small, insignificant world has not been split open and left gaping.
***
I’m in my room, staring at the ceiling. The funeral service was hours ago.
The house feels empty and cold. I hear a stifled whimper from down the hall.
            Mom.
Probably crying into a pillow so the house can’t hear, but it can. It seems unfair she can’t wail aloud, so loud  the house’s hundred-year-old studs tremble.
She doesn’t. I don’t either. We cry in our own rooms, remembering a man who will never be here again.
The house creaks. Maybe it feels the weight of our grief, maybe the floorboards are buckling because the burden is too heavy.
I ache, desperate to forget the long battle with cancer, the blood sputtering out of his mouth with his last words—what where they? I can’t remember because the fear in his eyes overshadowed anything he said. Now the loss. I don’t want to feel this loss. Some divine entity has taken dull scissors and cut out a piece of my life and now I have jagged scars to remind me I lost too much. Too much.
I want to forget, because it hurts to remember.
I bury my head in the pillow, hoping to suffocate the memories, to choke out the pain.

Blog Tour Special:

Author Interview:
When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
When I was a pre-teen I wanted to be a novelist. Then, I decided I wanted to do something else. Over a decade later, I decided I wanted to be a novelist again.

How did the idea of Ashes & Ice series come to you?
I was 12 when I did a character sketch for Jade. When I was 22 I started expanding on it. I knew the first scene and the last one, but had no idea what to put in the middle :) That is where plotting/planning came in.

Are any of your characters based off people you know?
No... :)

How many books will be in the series?
2 or 3. I am still debating. I will most likely make the second one stand as the ending, but then be able to expand on it later if I want. But don't worry readers! ALL of Jade's secrets will come to light in book 2 :)

How do you over come writer’s block?
Reading, music, free writing. And finally, especially if under deadline, I come to realize that I just have to do it. My editor told me, "Grab inspiration by the balls." LOL.

What was the first paranormal book you read?
Annette Curtis Klause's Silver Kiss and Blood and Chocolate. Both are awesome.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
Cassandra Clare, A.G. Howard, Rachel Hartman, Tahereh Mafi, John Greene, and more.

Can you give us any hints about future books?
Ashes and Ice Book 2 (Cover and release date to be revealed in spring/summer) and a stand-alone paranormal romance set in Mexico and a dystopian novella series.

What paranormal being would you like to be?
X-MEN type character... STORM! Oh yeah, I want to be Storm.

If you were stranded on a deserted island what character would you want with you and why?
Hmmm, Connor because I <3 him or Ziri from Laini Taylor's Days of Blood and Starlight or... well, any hot, sweet guy would be just fine. Or someone funny... If I am going to die on a stranded island, I at least want to go out with a smile on my face.

What would you do in a zombie apocalypse?
Kill myself before the Zombies chewed off my leg.

 Favorites:
Pets: Raccoons. Don't hate. They are beyond fabulous. Remember the LaZy boy commercials?? Yeah, they are even cuter than that.
Food: Ceviche or Tinga
Drink: White Russians or Margaritas :)
Holiday: Christmas.
Music: Right now, Indie musician Martina Desiree.

 This or That
Night or Day? Night. Ehem, pajamas and cuddling!
Theater or Rent? I love going to the movies, but RENT. We spread out blankets and do movie marathons.
Fall or Summer? Fall!!!! Perfect weather and in my area GORGEOUS colors.
Music or Reading? Oh, this is a terrible, terrible question. How about music while reading! Ha! Look how sneaky I am.
Pet Dragon or Pet Gargoyle? Dragon. Dragons are simply badass.
Flip flops or Tennis Shoes? Tennis Shoes. Flip flops hate me.

Thank you to Rochelle for letting me review and interview her. Thank you to Lady Amber for letting me participate in this blog tour.

Leah Clifford currently lives in Ohio, but frequently dreams of finding an abandoned mansion in the south that she can restore. In her spare time she loves to travel and has been known to drive over two hours to get kickass quesadillas. So far for jobs she's sold corn at a roadside stand, been a pizza delivery girl, a camp counselor, an extreme cave tour guide, a flight attendant, a waitress (x3), a grocery store clerk and a writer. Out of all of them, writing has been the most fun. She's pretty sure she's gonna stick with it.

Disarming Blog Tour

I am so excited to participate in this blog tour. I love Alexia and her books are amazing. So let's get started and get to know Alexia and learn more about her books.

Alexia currently lives in Las Vegas, Nevada–Sin City! She loves to spend every free moment writing or playing with her four rambunctious kids. Writing has always been her dream and she has been writing ever since she can remember. She loves writing paranormal fantasy and poetry and devours books daily. Alexia also enjoys watching movies, dancing, singing loudly in the car and Italian food.

Book 1:
"Never tease anything that wants to eat you. My name is April Tate and my blood is the new gold. Vampires and hybrids have overrun my world, once vibrant with life, but now a graveyard of death shrouded in shadows. I fight to survive; I fight for my mother and brother. The journey is full of turns that I am quite unprepared for. And I'm just hoping to make it to the next Vegas sunrise..."

In a post-apocalyptic world, a viral epidemic has wiped out most of the earth’s population, leaving behind few humans but untold numbers of mutated vampires. April is a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in the remains of Las Vegas one year after the outbreak. She has become a ferocious vampire killer and after her family is abducted, she goes searching for them. What she finds is a new breed of vampire, unlike any she has seen before. Unsure of whom she can trust, she discovers that her view of the world is not as black and white as she once thought, and she's willing to bend the rules to rescue her family. But in trying to save them, she may only succeed in bringing her fragile world crashing down around her.

My Review:
Wow what a ride. In a genre filled with zombie apocalypse having a book about a vampire apocalypse is so refreshing. I got sucked in from the first line. “Never tease anything that wants to eat you.” If that doesn’t draw you in I don’t know what will.

April, her mom, and her six year old brother are all that is left of the human race living everyday not knowing if it’s their last in the fight with the wildlings. While out one day to get more supplies her mom and brother go missing. April goes crazy trying to find them and in her quest to take out as many wildling vampires she meets a new breed of vampire a hybrid. April doesn’t know if she can trust Miranda but if she wants her family back than she has to go against everything she believes and trust a hive of hybrid vampires. In doing so she learns so much more about wildlings, hybrids, and herself. For April and her family are not entirely human themselves. April also meets Rye who at first she doesn’t want to trust but she can’t fight the feelings she has for him and she’s not sure she wants to.

I loved every second of this action packed ride Alexia took me on. I found myself admiring April for all her strengths and even her faults. I found myself forgetting at times that she is only seventeen and has seen more death and destruction than most people will ever see. I don’t know how I would react if I was in April’s place having to fight everyday to survive. April is so well written that I could feel all her pain and confusion through out the whole book. The side characters are written just as well. We get to know them just as well. One in particular named Rye. He is so strong and wants nothing more than to protect April and be by her side forever. I found myself falling for him right along with April. I am hoping there will be another book. I want more April and Rye.

If you are looking for a new apocalyptic book then this book is for you. Alexia is defiantly an author to watch out for. She is on my must buy list and she should be on yours. 5/5 Bloody Fangs

Book 2:
The world has changed. One must adapt to survive or hold on to the crumbling shards of humanity.

April continues to hold her fragile world together, but the ties that hold her family together are quickly unraveling. Rumors of a massive human underground settlement draw her to the shadows of the city once more in search of other survivors more like her, even with the hybrid vampires opposing her every move.

The darkness hides secrets along with the continued threat the Feral Vampires create, but a greater evil hides within the city. Something tells April that the humans will be less than welcoming of her, and that's if she can find them before the Vampires do. Joining sides with the enemy might be the only choice she has left.

Excerpt 1:
In the distance, the snarls and moans of the feral vampires filled the air as they descended from their daylight tombs. It sent a different kind of shiver down my spine as I concentrated on breathing deeply, attempting to slow my frantic heartbeat down. It was unnerving, sleeping in the middle of the city, surrounded by fangs and death. I hated this and doubted I would get much sleep tonight, if any. I’d just have to do without.
“Going to be a long night, try to sleep some.” Rye’s voice was soft, but it did nothing to soothe my nerves. The chair creaked with his weight as he came to sit near me.
“Okay.”
Excerpt 2:
The woman, or girl—he wasn’t quite sure for he hadn’t asked her what her age was, though it seemed pretty certain that she was in her late teens, maybe early twenties—made her way in easily. She slipped quietly into the rear of one of the main greenhouses. It was lit up in there like twilight all night long with the full spectrum of light slowly growing as daybreak came. It was sufficient to see a lot of the floor, though the foliage and abundance of greenery would be sufficient to hide her for a while. Elijah knew she had figured this out and was now weaving her way through jagged rows of saplings, fruit and eucalyptus trees. Her black clothing hid her enough that no one noticed the svelte woman dodging people, sticking to the shadows and snapping quick, concise pictures of everything she saw.
She’s studying us.
Elijah shook his head, amused by this revelation. Of all things, this human was studying other humans! Ha! But what for? What did she want to do with those pictures? Why didn’t she just waltz right up to the door and introduce herself? She was definitely human and might have been welcomed.
Or maybe not. He frowned. Katrina was volatile and could decide she was a threat to the city instead. And what if she was a hybrid human? Could she be?

My Review:
Once again Alexia has sucked me into her world and had me forgetting everything around me until the very last page and then left me heart broken and begging her for book three.

Disarming picks up right where Reign of Blood left off. With April still confused about her feelings for Rye, still fighting feral vampires, and wondering if she and her family are the only humans left. That is until April hears about a massive underground world where humans have survived. April sets off to find them but in doing so she not only pushes Rye farther away but she has put herself in danger for these humans might just be the one enemy that can destroy her and everything she loves.

I loved this book from the first page to the last. We get to see so much more of April and the way she thinks and feels but at times I wanted to just smack her for the way she treats Rye. But I also understand why she pushes him away. In her mind there is no happy ever after just pain and destruction. But one action changes everything for her and she finally admits to herself that she loves Rye. I was so excited when she realized this but at the same time my heart broke because of what she went through to figure it out. As for Rye I have no words that will fit him. He is just perfect and his love for April just pulls at my heart and makes me fall for him.

If your looking for a heart pounding, emotion pulling, heart breaking book that will leave you begging for more then read Disarming. I promise you won’t be disappointed. 5/5 Bloody Fangs

Author Takeover with Selah Janel

Today's Author Takeover is with Selah and I am so excited. I have been wanting to read her book for awhile so when she asked to take over my blog I jumped at the chance. So lets get to know more about Selah and her book then she will take over.

Selah Janel has been blessed with a giant imagination since she was little and convinced that fairies lived in the nearby state park or vampires hid in the abandoned barns outside of town. Her appreciation for a good story was enhanced by a love of reading, the many talented storytellers that surrounded her, and a healthy curiosity for everything. A talent for warping everything she learned didn’t hurt, either. She gravitates to writing fantasy and horror, but can be convinced to pursue any genre if the idea is good enough. Often her stories feature the unknown creeping into the “real” world and she loves to find the magical in the mundane.
She has four e-books with No Boundaries Press, including the historical vampire story ‘Mooner’ and the contemporary short ‘The Other Man’.  Her work has also been included in ‘The MacGuffin’, ‘The Realm Beyond’, ‘Stories for Children Magazine’, and the upcoming Wicked East Press anthology ‘Bedtime Stories for Girls’. She likes her music to rock, her vampires lethal, her fairies to play mind games, and her princesses to hold their own.

Live like a rock star.
Dance ‘til you die.
Are you in?

Blurb
What kind of a rock star lives in a small town in the middle of nowhere and plays at weddings and funerals? That’s what Jeremiah Kensington is thinking after an unsuccessful bar gig one night. Then Jack Scratch comes into his life, ready to represent him and launch him to stardom. Jack can give him everything: a new band, a new name, a new life, a new look, and new boots…although they aren’t exactly new. They once belonged to The One, a rocker so legendary and so mysterious that it’s urban legend that he used black magic to gain success. But what does Jeremiah care about urban legend? And it’s probably just coincidence that the shoes make him dance better than anyone, even if it doesn’t always feel like he’s controlling his movements. It’s no big deal that he plunges into a world of excess and decadence as soon as he puts the shoes on his feet, right?
But what happens when they refuse to come off?

Excerpt:
They’re mine. I’m really holding them, Jeremiah realized. I’m holding history that isn’t supposed to exist. When The One took the stage, any competition turned tail and ran. It was said that the one time the singer revealed what he looked like the crowds were moved to tears by his beauty and sophistication, and tore each other apart because they couldn’t get to him. Some said it was a conspiracy that complete copies of his songs didn’t exist because the music was too potent to release to the public. There were people who still worshipped the mystery, the music, the outfits, and the boots.

And now those people would come to him.

“Go on. Try them on,” Jack encouraged. Jeremiah nodded and carefully put the platforms on the floor. Shaking with nerves, the youth sat and guided his feet into the cherry red sheaths. Electricity crackled along his instep and through his toes. He tugged the vinyl up over his calf and gasped. Jeremiah was overtaken by a sudden burn, a sudden ant-crawling of power that worked its way through his skin and into his very soul.

“What the—” he choked. The plastic spasmed, tightened around his foot, and then relaxed. The left boot stretched itself a little higher up his calf and extended its sole and heel a little more to adapt to his needs. Jeremiah thought he had imagined it, but the right boot immediately followed suit. The matching sets of the laces squirmed and rippled, settling into a slightly different pattern than when they were taken out of their box. A quick look around proved that while everyone in the room was looking, Jack was the only other person that actually saw. “Did they just…?” Jeremiah couldn’t bring himself to say something so bizarre. He barely managed to hold back a cry when a thousand tiny needle teeth nibbled his skin from toes to knees. A tingling sensation spread under his skin and Jeremiah was filled with a rush of violent confidence that almost made him swoon.

“Good. They fit,” Jack said. Only his tiny, mysteriously cruel little smile hinted that he was aware of the boots’ strange behavior.

The longer Jeremiah looked at himself the more he realized that he could do no wrong. My life just changed. With these on my feet, my past is gone. I’m going to be better than I ever thought possible.

All around him the yes-men and hangers-on gaped.

“You look so good!” the store footman practically swooned. His vinyl and lace frock coat danced under the fluttering movements of his hands. His sharp, pale face flushed with excitement underneath the stylized Victorian wig.

“I’m gonna cry you look so good!” the blonde assistant squealed, gripping Jack’s knee as if she’d keel over if she didn’t have it there to support her. “It’s like I’m witnessing history!”

The faces that surround him were positively thunderstruck and at his mercy. The camera kept right on clicking. Jeremiah got to his feet and struck a few more ambitious poses, dropping into a low crouch before kicking a leg up in an insane bastardization of a round kick.  It didn’t matter that he’d grown up looking like every other average guy in Middle America. It didn’t matter that he’d been more accustomed to cotton T-shirts and washed-out blue jeans than the clothes Jack had him wearing. The overall look wasn’t complete, but the boots pulled everything together. The added height evened out his lanky proportions. In some unlikely way the platforms made his stubble-sporting, angular face look downright exotic. His eyes blazed liquid brown heat and his dishwater hair almost glowed under the dressing room lights.

Jeremiah sashayed around the tiny space and leapt onto the low podium at the room’s center, full of a burning drive to do something. He wanted to sing. He wanted to rock. He wanted to dance, and he’d never had that sort of urge before in his life. Every school dance he’d ever gone to had involved him either playing in the band or drinking contraband beverages with his friends outside the building. “Guess I’m a natural!” he laughed. He knew he was lying, Jack knew he was lying, but there was no reason for anyone else to know the truth. Why bother with the truth when the image in the mirror was so much better?

He had expected his balance to be shaky in the tall platforms, but it was like the boots were built for him. He hadn't thought to check the size. Maybe The One wasn't the original owner; maybe they conformed to whoever wore them. Jeremiah’s face glowed when he looked at his mirror image. His reflection looked as giddy and ecstatic as he felt. Why do I care what they are? If they work, they work! His eyes dropped to the new footwear. He was just able to see the tiny, warped image of his face in the shiny toes. Everything’s going to be amazing from now on. As he admired his distorted image via his feet,  all of his hang-ups and personality drained out of him. Who needs a personality with boots like these?

Jack Scratch watched his protégé glided round the room, that same tiny, dangerous smile just barely curling his full mouth. "Just think. What you have on represents everything that you want to be," he coached. His words drilled through the rocker's ears and hardwired themselves into the deepest parts of Jeremiah’s heart and soul. "They’re everything you want on your side. These boots are temptation and chaos, just like you. I've got it," he declared. "I've got your name."

"Give it to me," a raspy voice in front of the mirror breathed.

"Forget Jeremiah Kensington: folk singer, blue jean rocker, country boy, small town loser,” Jack breathed, his giant hands fervently patting down his front until he found which jacket pocket his cigarettes were hidden in. It was amazing that he didn’t gouge himself in the chest given the sharpened tip of the massive silver ring that enveloped his right forefinger. The manager leaned back against the sofa and lit up, never once taking his eyes off his new golden boy and meal ticket. “From now on you are J.K. Asmodeus, rock star and corrupter of the masses." A thin plume of smoke stretched up to frame his intense expression.

J.K. looked from Jack to the man in the mirror, saw how the red glitter of the boots was echoed in his eyes. "Yes."

The two ignored the gasps and commentary around them as everyone texted photos and alerted the necessary paparazzi. The pair shared a slow smile as Jack inhaled another draw of nicotine. “It’s time to sign,” he murmured. The smoke crept in front of his face and turned his pleased expression into something that bordered on animalistic. He removed the top sheet of the stack he’d been examining and held it out to the younger man.

I should wait and consult a lawyer. I should take my time. These things need to be done with care, a distant echo of a Midwestern conscience chided. J.K. ignored it, grinned back at his manager, and reached for the fountain pen the manager handed him. His expression was almost as malevolent as Jack’s, though there were still traces of wholesomeness that had yet to drain away. “Let’s do it.”

Now it's time to let welcome Selah to the blog for her take over post:
A lot of people ask me the question that a lot of authors get asked: ‘Where do you get your ideas?’ I guess a lot of people assume that you have to be plugged into some other way of thinking, or purposefully do some sort of secret special writing exercise or exorcism to get ideas to write about, especially if you want to write genre fiction.
The plain fact is ideas are all around us if a person is open to them. I try to be open to new story ideas as they come, and ways to improve or change up whatever I’m currently working on. It’s amazing to me that when I least expect it, the most mundane, every-day things can inspire me. It may be a line in an article that gets me thinking, it may be a news blurb or something I encounter while walking in the neighborhood, but my notes are full of little incidents that can trigger the plot or a subplot in any of my works in progress in a heartbeat.
How many times do we pass groups of plants in our neighborhoods? What if they were secretly inhabited by pixies? What if the winding greenery along the highway, those trees and weeds that creep and press over the guardrails…what if it’s part of the forest’s primordial genetics urging it to fight back against all the progress man has put into place? What if the regular parts of our little lives are far from regular, but part of a much bigger plot set into place by things as far from human as you can get?
I also draw a lot on the interests I’ve developed through the years. My love of vampires and my love of overlooked parts of American history influenced by horror e-book Mooner. My love of music and my curiosity over the changing dynamics in relationships inspired me to write The Other Man. I continually go back to the influences and lessons of Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury, Madeline L’Engle and many others. And yet, I was unprepared for how much of my interests and emotions would find their way into In the Red.
The novel is loosely based on the themes of the old fairy tale ‘The Red Shoes,’ but merged with some urban fantasy elements and rock n’ roll. I was able to bring a lot to the story: my love of music, my experience and love of performing, my experience growing up in small towns, my love of the fantastic, of magic, of otherworldly creatures. Even if I don’t always agree with the choices my characters’ make, they were absolutely the right choices for the story. Still, it took a lot of work to get the details right, as well as a lot of extra research on the things I wasn’t sure about: a lot of medical information, the ins and outs of excess, and what it’s like to perform as an instrumentalist. That’s also something that helps as a writer: the willingness to be curious and seek answers to your own questions. Sure, I could have glossed over some things, but it would have made the story that much weaker. Urban fantasy works because it’s also rooted in the real world, and if the mundane things didn’t seem real, then the fantastic aspects would really be uneven in comparison.
It also took delving into what the characters would feel when presented with certain situations. In this case I was able to draw on my theatre training and use a variation of the actor’s tool, sense memory. Basically, I tried really hard to think of a time in my life where I might feel something similar, really figure out what I was actually feeling, and use that as a starting point for what my characters were feeling. Some parts were easier to write than others, but that life experience made it a little easier to expand the story on a deadline.
You don’t have to have those interests or little tricks to be a writer, of course. Everyone has their own life experiences and their own tools – that’s what makes every author so different. It’s why there can be such a wealth of stories in the world, which is fantastic. Every author, whether they’re a big name and big contracts or someone who’s just starting out and never been published, has things that strike them, things they notice, and things that have happened to them in their lives that they can draw upon. I think it’s important to realize that that’s something that really makes authors equally capable, if they can learn to listen and draw upon all those things.

Thank you to Selah for Taking Over my blog today. I hope you all had as much fun as I did getting to know more about Selah, her book, and how she comes up with her ideas. Selah has donated 1 ebook for a giveaway. To win answer this question: If you could walk in somebody's shoes, who would you pick and why? (this can be a fictional character or real person) Good Luck!!! Please make sure you stop by Selah's page and tell her thank you for the donation.

Ashes & Ice Release Day Blitz

I am so excited to be participating in this release day blitz for Ashes & Ice by Rochelle Maya Callen. Before I show you the cover and let you read a couple excerpts lets get to know Rochelle better.

Excerpt #1:

Excerpt #2:

Connor

Excerpt from Prologue:

Victory was mine the day I saw my mother’s essence leave her body and wrap itself around me like a cloak. I had her memories, her skills, and her looks. I could be her forever – if I wanted. I sometimes find myself wondering if there is anything left between us that is redeemable but feeling the extent of her fear and disgust towards me now as it coursed through my veins, I knew there was nothing salvageable left. Instead, I shrugged her essence off of me and watched it return to the motionless body on the floor. The world became my stage and I was determined to play the lead role.
Now, I am anything and anyone I want, because I am a Stager.
                        I am you.

You may read the complete prologue to The Stager on my blog!

Wow isn't that a great cover and it sounds so good. I can't wait to read it. Thank you Jaidis for letting me participate in your cover reveal.
